Extensive bird sound archive

With over 80,000 meticulously captured bird sound recordings, The Sound Approach archive is one of the most comprehensive collections available to birders, researchers, and professionals.

Our archive offers an unparalleled resource for anyone interested in the study and enjoyment of birdsong, providing access to high-quality recordings that are both scientifically valuable and beautifully captured. Our recordings can also provide accurate and tailored content for AI developers and production companies, looking to take their technologies and outputs to the next level.

Our recordings cover a range of categories, species and geographies. These include:

  • top quality recordings where beauty of the recording was our top priority, often with a beautiful natural ambience around the main subject.
  • We can often offer the same species in very different contexts, for example Common Loons (Great Northern Divers) singing in Iceland with European species in the background, Canada with North American background, or calling while wintering off the Irish coast. Or Common Nightingale singing in northern Europe, or while wintering in sub-saharan Africa.
  • Recordings that are very much focussed on an individual bird or animal, with minimal background. In these recordings effectively we have a soloist, or a single-species recording.
  • Recordings intended to document as much as possible the repertoire and individual variation of a given species, so where scientific documentation was the priority. Often these constitute large sets of recordings from the same location.
  • Recordings from near and far, including very far, which we saved for documentation purposes, e.g. how a given species or call type might sound from afar, flying over at night, and less commonly heard sounds etc. Although saved largely to enhance our own learning, these recordings, including the very distant ones, are ‘gold dust’ for training machine learning algorhythms. Their identification has been treated with the same seriousness as in the close range recordings.
