The Sound Approach
Our story
The Sound Approach aims to popularise birdsong and the understanding of birdsong.
We own one of the largest privately-owned archives of bird sound recordings in the world, exceeding 83,000 recordings of more than 1,500 species, with a particular focus on the Western Palaearctic. We are an independent award-winning publishing
house, with six books complete with accompanying bird sounds, focusing on different groups of birds or locations. In 2008, Petrels Night and Day was awarded Birdwatch Book of the Year. We are renowned for the diversity, quality and scope of our bird sound archive.

Since 2000, Mark Constantine, Magnus Robb and Arnoud van den Berg have been building a major new collection of bird sound recordings. Besides those of the three main recordists, The Sound Approach collection has also received major contributions from René Pop, Killian Mullarney and Dick Forsman. Paul Morton has regularly assisted The Sound Approach with day-to-day running, events and communications, and most recently, Lucy McRobert has been appointed to oversee marketing and communications.
