Waders

The many species of waders (order Charadriiformes) have in common that their migration flights seemingly merge from day to night without any real difference, except that at night we hear them in more unexpected places, such as from the balcony of a house in the middle of a large city. Indeed, the attentive listener will probably be surprised when he hears, quite unexpectedly, a Eurasian Whimbrel Numenius phaeopus over his house for the first time. Other species, such as Bar-tailed Godwit Limosa lapponica, are very much coastal and extremely rare to hear inland. As a rare treat, we can sometimes hear snatches of wader songs during their nocturnal migration flights.
